The South Pacific tribe who worship Prince Philip believe he will now return

I saw a random comment in the past days after Philip passed saying someone should tell these folks in the pacific about what happened. Didnt think twice about it until now. What the fuck.
That picture is not the island. Tanna is about the size of New York city. They have mobiles, internet etc etc. I went there in 2008!
They get high on Kava on his birthday.
“The ‘Prince Philip Movement’ came to light in the late 1950s and the unusual conviction originates in legend.
According to ancient tales existing long before the tribe’s awareness of Philip, a white man born of volcano spirit travelled overseas to marry a powerful woman, before returning to them.
They believe the duke was born in their homeland and was, until recently, keeping the flame of their culture alive in the UK.
It is believed that when the tribespeople first encountered British colonists they saw images of the royal family, concluding that the late duke must be their spiritual leader.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s arrival to Vanuatu on an official visit in 1974 further entrenched these beliefs.
Chief Jack of the Yaohnanen said: “I saw him standing on the deck in his white uniform and I knew then that he was the true Messiah.
“To see him in the flesh like that, even though I know that deep inside he is more than flesh and bones.”
Initially, the duke was not aware of the tribe, but after having been informed, he sent a signed portrait of himself.
In return the Yaohnanen gifted him a traditional pig-killing club, which he posed alongside.
Each year, the natives of Tanna would hold a large celebration on the duke’s birthday, in the belief that he would return.
The occasion involves eating dancing and the ingestion of a ceremonial narcotic called Kava.
During the celebrations, they share tales of the Duke of Edinburgh’s prowess and his prophesised marriage to Queen Elizabeth II, as well as what they believe to be his magical powers.
The Yaohnanen people believe Philip had the power to influence world events, and was responsible for Barack Obama becoming president.
In 2007, a television programme called Meet The Natives saw five natives spend five weeks in the UK.
The documentary culminated in them meeting Prince Philip in Windsor, where they exchanged gifts.
The Prince Philip Movement is not the only such cult in Tanna.
It has its roots in the John Frum (John from America) Movement, which glorifies a figure often based on a US World War II Soldier.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s death has not marked the end of this movement.
The tribe believe that he now will return to them in spirit form and share the wealth of the British Crown.”
Let’s be fair, we’ve all watched him seemingly come back from the dead multiple times over the last ten years or so.
He’s got to do it faster than three days if he means to best the record.
> The Yaohnanen people believe Philip had the power to influence world events, and was responsible for Barack Obama becoming president.
How much do these people know about the world outside of their island? They know Obama was president so they must be getting information from somewhere.
Very important to mention.. that before Philip arrived Tana had been experiencing an extreme drought.. The villagers were desperate for rain.. the day after philip landed on tana.. the heavens opened and their prayers were answered… this fuelled their worship of him further.
Someone scatter his ashes on that island
I was mildly worried about them, nice to know they’re optimistic.
>The Yaohnanen people believe Philip…was responsible for Barack Obama becoming president.
Royal family not racist, confirmed
>In 2007, a television programme called Meet The Natives saw five natives spend five weeks in the UK. The documentary culminated in them meeting Prince Philip in Windsor, where they exchanged gifts.
This is the main thing I took from the article. I might have to watch it as I can’t imagine that ever happening again
What if it turns out this *is* the one, true religion? I mean, we have proof of the existence of Phillip, which already gives him a head start on most competitors.
Philip, L Ron Hubbard, Joseph Smith and Jesus will all come back in the same Cadillac Escalade to sell Doterra.
So, wait… Prince Philip knew there was some warm, sunny, tropical South Pacific island where he was worshipped as a god, and yet he decided to stay on a rainy, dreary island whose natives thought he was a bit of a dick? Not only not a god, not very smart.
This is why Starfleet has a prime directive.
as a christian I dont really think I can make fun of them :/
Think about how easily a myth like this could take hold 2000 years ago.
like ewoks worshipping c3po
Ah let em have it! I mean there are others out there who worship every Sunday hoping their prince will also return.
Don’t laugh at them, you people believe in religions even more ridiculous. At least Prince Phillip was real.
The only reason this seems really stupid is because it’s recent. Give these guys control over the western world for around a thousand years, have children brought up believing Prince Philip will return, teach that whatever stories about Prince Philip they came up with are inerrant and perfect, and people would have a very different perception.
Makes about as much sense as any other religion.
