I received this in an email from a graphic design college. Their course is for $ 50,000. Maybe I just don’t understand art.

What is this? a 90’s textbook!

Why do this? It sounds like a 90’s eBay listing.

I think they were going for all the shit they can do in one poster but that looks terrible. Half the text In the back is hard to read and then there’s text added. I don’t know if you did that so it’s easier to read but if they did that’s just terrible.

It would make more sense if it were for an art course. The fact that it’s for a graphic design course is so much worse.

like there’s a lot of artistic choices being made here and i kinda dig the color scheme, but yeah from a design/usability standpoint this is heinous lmao. like the important, relevant info is more or less just completely hidden unless you squint, and even the title is partially obscured. i also gotta wonder if this is at all legible to people with certain types of color-blindness?

AND i just noticed the yellow squiggles in the bottom left corner are NOT just abstract squiggles and i’m irrationally upset by that. (edit: the more i look the more “abstract” features that are actually text i notice why would you make your information-conveying-medium work so hard at actually conveying information)

I see this style of design a lot but this one has absolutely ABYSMAL font choices, like a layout similar to this with better fonts would improve this hugely

    It’s brutalist design.

It’s all the rage, but I think it just looks shit.

There’s a website somewhere showing different styles.

Take a look at the designs for the covers of the latest Fifa and Madden video games for other examples.

It all looks like a 5 year old was let loose on PowerPoint 95.

Yeah, you are missing the boat a bit…its a very en vogue style, basically been the standard in european arts culture, but has found its way over here in the last decade and become heavily diluted and detached from its conceptual moorings.

I’m assuming this was done by a student at the school wanting to be edgy and go for brutalist design – but you’ve got to master the rules of design before you can break them successfully.

Edit: the ‘All on Zoom baby ;)’ just solidifies my thoughts that this is student work.

You uh, you missed blocking out the school’s name. I know the school, it has a reputation for being very on the edge and encouraging avant garde aesthetics and methodologies. I’m not remotely surprised to see this kind of thing coming out of their programs.

This actually gave me a great idea for an art course. Make students make a poster for the course week one and then for their final. Then you distribute those and the advertisement is to see the progress the course can offer!

It’s kinda the new aesthetic for the type of students that go to art schools these days. This one in particular feels very clustered.

  31. CHERNO-B1LL Avatar

Design like this is a thing and has been around for decades. It has its roots in Russian constructivism. Deconstruction or ‘deconsteuctivism’ if you want to be a dick about it, is all about ‘doing it wrong’ and breaking the rules of design. They’ve just updated the references.

This stuff is 90s AF. Gen Z are all about it. It’s not inherently crappy “issa vibe”. Synthwave design is a branch of this. There’s a thousand branches and it’s easy to do, but hard to do well. Which means there’s a lot of crap masquerading as bold design. The difference is completely subjective and intangible, which makes it really hard to judge. But when it works, it works. As an aesthetic it’s a bit like a Picasso. It’s either art, or a shit drawing of a face. Depends on the artist.

The designer totally nailed the early 90’s look.

  34. pixm Avatar
    pixm

It hurts how few people understand that this is as intentional showcase of brutalism, with a heave 90s/early 2000s aesthetic. The designer that’s been scribbled out, Sara Kaaman, works with this style as part of her work.

It’s not design for the masses its design for designers.

If OP doesn’t get that…a dedicated design course may not be the path for them because this is the shit they do..

I actually quite like it. It’s very innovative in its defiance of homogenized trends, and has a very distinctive visual identity (which in design is a huge deal). It also makes you really remember seeing it, which means for design it has overwhelmingly succeeded.

    It’s like a glitch-style brutalism. I really dig it.

Idk, in my experience, there’s a lot of overlap between queer culture (particularly more radical anarcha-queer communities) and experimental/glitch art communities.

Maybe this was a deliberate aesthetic (in the same way that trans-girls-listening-to-vapourwave-and-coding-Haskell is a very particular, very niche, very awesome queer subculture).

This thread is a big _WHOOSH_.

This poster is intentionally bad. It is a joke for other designers. They are not trying to attract the public to this. They spent a lot of time making it look as bad as it does.

You can think that’s dumb, but again, you’re probably not the target audience. They don’t want _you_ to come to this talk.

This seems a bit unfair. This seems to be for a visiting lecture series for an art college that likely was designed by a student worker. From what I can tell, it’s free and possibly open to the public. Likely, if one is interested in this event, there would be information on an Instagram or website on how to attend.
