What you’re actually doing with “ask not to track” is denying the app access to your IDFA (a unique randomly-assigned device identifier ~~you can reset in system settings~~ edit: as of iOS 14 you can’t). Thing is, even without this identifier, they could gather enough data points, like your IP address and device model and so on to uniquely identify you across apps. This is called fingerprinting. It’s much less reliable, yes, but it’s still a technical possibility, hence this confusing wording I suppose.

Its because they can’t confirm that apps will listen to being asked not to track you

Seen this so many times. It’s because nobody can actually make sure these apps don’t track you. We live in an actual cyberpunk world folks, get used to it.

ITT: people who don’t realize how the app tracking works and also don’t realize this isn’t available to the general public yet since 14.5 is still in beta.

Apple doesn’t want costumers to go after them when inevitably the app’s ad service shows them something they don’t think it should’ve and they go “but Apple said they would stop the tracking???”. Edit: I still think this is a consequence of Asshole Design but I’m pretty sure it isn’t Apple’s fault

It’s much easier (from a software/math perspective) to definitively say that something _will_ happen, rather than something _won’t_ happen. Any belief that something _won’t_ happen ultimately boils down to trust.

In this instance, even if you press “Ask App Not to Track”, all that guarantees is that iOS withholds information in this context – that doesn’t mean that the app is completely prevented from getting trackable information through other means. Apple knows this, and they would probably get sued if they had it say “Deny” and third-party apps/ad networks kept tracking people.

As with everything that sucks about the internet, blame advertisers. Apple is at least making an attempt to slow them down.

This is great design, not asshole design. If you were not using Apple you wouldn’t even be given this option.

The only “do not track my shit” buttons I can think of for apps like that is the uninstall button

i was about to precisely write what u/grishkaa already wrote.

TLDR apps can always find a way to track you hence a “Don’t track” button would be misleading.

Apple probably doesn’t want to give you a guarantee for legal reasons. This is basically “we’ll do what we can but apps are sneaky”

So Apple automatically tries to stop tracking, but ask app not to track tells it you are demanding that they also don’t try to circumvent that and gather clues based on usage. Not all apps will respect this, but it’s basically one more way they want to stop apps from tracking you, even if it’s as simple as asking them not to.

Legally, you only “asked” the app not to track you, so if you find out they do, and you take it to court or whatever the excuse could be “you ASKED us not to track, we never said that we wouldn’t.”

Sad thing is that most countries and people don’t give a damn about data privacy. To my knowledge Germany js the only country where with any service the provider is legally forced to provide an opt out option for every data collecting happening.
