Tesla is only a level 2 autonomous car meaning the driver must be ready to take the wheel. People are putting too much faith in their vehicle’s ability to keep them alive.

“First responders had to use 30,000 gallons of water over four hours to put out the fire, as the Tesla’s battery kept reigniting”

    Holy shit

I’ve seen so many videos of people hopping in the back seat while autopilot is on.

I’m all for autonomous/assisted driving features, but man people need to not be stupid doing them and should still be aware and ready to take control of the vehicle if needed.

Phew, thank heavens, there was no driver to kill.

The two men killed were close family friends of my parents. A doctor and his best friend. I was shocked when they told me about this accident this morning, definitely didn’t expect to see it on Reddit.

Odd, my model S will not drive of there is nobody in the driver’s seat. They have weight sensors to determine this.

    > Tesla didn’t respond to a request for comment on Sunday. The company
    > dissolved its press office and doesn’t usually respond to media inquiries,

” Authorities tried to contact Tesla for advice on putting out the fire; it’s not clear whether they received any response ” nope, open a service request.

There is a lesson here. The goal should not be to make self-driving cars. The goal should be to make self driving cars with idiots inside them

The tech worked as it was intended, it was the humans that went out of their way to trick it. It’s impossible for any companies to make a product with every “what if negligent driver does this”. Use as intended or don’t at all.

What are people using to not be in the front seat while driving in a Tesla? That’s just stupid considering the only place the car will FSD is on highways. Seriously reckless.

Reminder that there’s over 100 auto deaths every day in the US caused by human drivers.

Did they try and Tweet him?

This is ridiculous, how is it that it’s the cars fault when the driver is not in the drivers seat to keep control of his vehicle???? You are explicitly told “keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times and be prepared to take over at any moment”.

    DRIVER WAS NEGLIGENT!

Just a reminder Tesla’s are the safest cars ever tested by the NHTSA.

Yep, all those large lithium batteries once ignited burn like crazy. I’m guessing they were well done in no time. Obviously Darwins Law was in full action with that couple.

Self driving issues aside, there’s also this problem:

    >first responders had to use 30,000 gallons of water over four hours to put out the fire, as the Tesla’s battery kept reigniting. Authorities tried to contact Tesla for advice on putting out the fire; it’s not clear whether they received any response.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t using water (with the lithium batteries) make things worse? There are a lot of these vehicles on the road with a lot more coming. It seems like first responders need to be better equipped to deal with this.

    Multiple levels of “What?!?”

    Nobody in the driver’s seat.

Firefighters that don’t seem to know how to deal with a chemical fire.

Reading y’alls comments really blows my mind. People have to be accountable for their own actions. If you think someone having their Tesla drive while they got into the passenger seat is Tesla’s fault you probably don’t make good decisions either.

I mean, the fire part is interesting, but the “no one was in the drivers seat” is telling.

It’s clear, even wealthy people can be complete fucking idiots.

2 dudes playing grab ass in the back seat while the autopilot drove them. Smart move.

Quite stupid for people hopping out of the drivers seat.

Quite stupid of Elon to constantly hype up autopilot itself and reliability. Doesn’t help when the company and ceo themselves believe their features work almost flawlessly. Promising full autonomy over and over again saying they have it figured it and what not.

Ultimately the driver is too blame. Criticism directed towards Tesla for making autopilot seem more than it is.

People are stupid. Tesla, for some reason, cannot get that through their collective heads. They need to change the name of their advanced cruise control. Because that is what it is, cruise control.
