It’s an amazing thing to see in person. Beautiful art work. It stands at a rest area on a hill, overlooking a reservoir on the Missouri River in Chamberlain SD.
Why has nobody mentioned that this looks animated (i know it’s real)! It’s like a real life computer rendering! Very unique looking
I was there yesterday, it’s truly amazing to see in person. If you’re ever driving across SD on I-90 it’s a must stop.
It’s dignity! Gah! Don’t you even know dignity when you see it?
Looks cool as hell modern and traditional in the same time
Meanwhile the left nostril of Crazy Horse is projected to be finished by 2065
So beautiful. I wonder how they kept the cape from being damaged by wind.
She’s beautiful at night when she is all lit up! One of my favorite things to see when crossing the state!
And up the road, crazy horse is still 114 years from completion at it’s current rate.
I got some shots of this at night a few years back traveling homeless across the country (in vehicle, panhandling only, we were desperate)
Here’s the back side of the [shaw?](https://i.imgur.com/t1ATOwZ.jpg)
Here’s [another](https://i.imgur.com/nLYyoq2.jpg) after dark.
And [one](https://i.imgur.com/10bxQTE.jpg) near dark but a long exposure so it looks a lot brighter. Very cool place and I enjoyed it immensely.
Edit: thanks for sharing OP you brought back some very good memories!
Are those stained glass panes on the blanket? Must be incredible when the light hits it
This statue will forever and always be stunning. No matter what season, what angle it gets photographed at, or what time that photo is taken. It shifts with the day, and seems to be a living, breathing sculpture because of that.
It’s so cool. I wish I could see it in person one day.
The statue is misleading. No one in the Dakota nations are that tall. They are regular-sized humans.

This is like the third time I’ve seen this statue posted to Reddit and every time it does, people get all bent out of shape about how we should be doing this or that for the Native Americans instead of just building a statue and saying, “good enough”, so this time I finally decided to look into the history of the statue, and just as I suspected that’s not what happened at all. A couple from Rapid City commissioned the statue and donated it to the state in honor of SD’s 125th anniversary. Not that I expect the kind of person to complain about it to read this or care about it, but I just thought the backstory was kind of neat.
I’m all for putting up statues praising our memorable past and razing confederate monuments that represent our dark moments in our country’s history
I’ve actually been there, it’s a really cool spot!
I went there last June, the view around the statue alone is amazing!
Too bad native Americans didn’t get treated with “Dignity’
it cannot be more simple luanne.
This statue has a bunch of diamond panels that let wind pass through in order to stay more structurally stable. It’s a truly beautiful monument
Yo fuck yes. I never knew about this, that’s awesome.
We need more monuments like this and Crazy Horse. The Natives deserve honor and respect, imo it’s long over due.
This is a good opportunity to introduce some interesting local Native American history. Once again the US govt acted like duplicitous criminals.
putting up statues is almost as nice as not murdering a whole continents native population
Looking forward to the borders opening up, have been planning to see this since last spring, I think it would make an appropriate symbol for all the missing and murdered indigenous women
TIL Theres stuff to see in South Dakota.
What about giving them back their land instead?
Instead of statues can land just be given back? Or proper representation for the native people? Yes the statute is nice too
