Mash: four Russians went on hunger strike on a cruise to Antarctica
The Russians are stuck on board a cruise ship in Antarctica and arranged mass hunger strike. In total, the ship SH DIANA carries more than 170 passengers.
The luxury cruise ship was heading to Antarctica but suffered engine problems en route, forcing cruise line Swan Hellenic to cancel the trip. According to the organization, the ship is “creeping” at a speed of 11 kilometers per hour.
“It should arrive in the city of Ushuaia in the south Argentina on Saturday, November 30th. A team of engineers is then scheduled to come on board to fix the problem before its next voyage on December 3,” the cruise line said.
Passengers paid from 972 thousand rubles for trips
Travelers expressed their dissatisfaction with the situation and demanded that the funds spent on the cruise be returned to them. It is known that the price for a trip varies from 972 thousand rubles to 1.3 million rubles.
In a protest on board SH DIANA took part at least four Russians. According to them, the number of protesters will only increase. Moreover, they threatened a riot on board.
“The Chinese promise to declare a riot and want to take control of the ship by force,” said one of the travelers.
The cruise line has been known to refuse to refund the full cost of a tour. At the same time, the general director of SH DIANA, Andrea Zito, responded to this by saying that the offer made to passengers “significantly exceeds the legal requirement – by about 30 percent.” Tourists are planning to sue for a full refund.
Earlier, hundreds of Russians were stuck on a cruise ship in Japan
At the beginning of November, about 600 Russian tourists stuck in the Japanese port of Yokohama due to a breakdown of the Spectrum of The Seas cruise ship. The ship was unable to leave the port due to a technical problem.
As one of the cruise participants, a Russian woman named Yulia, said, the passengers were not given their passports, which is why the tickets to their homeland were simply burned.
The issue could be resolved if the Japanese authorities allowed the Russians to proceed to Tokyo airport before 10:00 local time on November 8. Then they could buy tickets for a flight to Shanghai and arrive there almost on time with their original plans for subsequent departure to Russia
However, passengers were promised a refund for the cruise and done all alcohol is free. The cruise company Royal Caribbean International apologized to the passengers of the ship and promised to fully refund the funds spent on the trip within 14 business days.
