Bashar al-Assad resigned as president and left Syria. This confirmed Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia. Assad’s current location was not disclosed there.
Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicatedthat Assad “decided to leave the presidential post” after negotiations with “a number of participants in the armed conflict” in the country, and also “gave instructions to carry out the transfer of power peacefully.”
The Foreign Ministry emphasized that Russia did not participate in these negotiations.

Anas al-Abda, a member of the political committee of the National Coalition of Opposition and Revolutionary Forces (NCORF), noted that his return is in the interests of the Syrian people, “who want to be tried by the Syrian court.”
