Another cable running across the Baltic Sea, turned out to be damaged. This time the Internet cable between Sweden and Finland was broken.
It is clarified that the rupture occurred on land in Finland. At the same time, the police who have taken over the investigation are already claiming that we are talking about sabotage.
This is the second break in the cable running through the Baltic in recent weeks. The first was blamed on a Chinese ship, whose captain could have been a Russian.
The cables were damaged on Monday evening
About cable breaks reported on the morning of December 3, it is clarified that they were discovered the night before. By data news service Sveriges Radio, the Internet cable on the line between Sweden and Finland has broken. Finnish police suspect intentional damage. The company that owns the cable, Global Connect, said that about 6,000 Finnish customers and about 100 companies were left without communications. According to the company, these are “isolated outages” in fiber optic networks.
There clarifiedthat there were two ruptures – one occurred in the Espoo region, and the other in Vihti (both regions are located near Helsinki). One problem has already been fixed, the second is still being worked on. The cause of the damage was not officially stated there, but Global Connect public relations manager Niklas Ekström suggested that they could have been damaged by excavators, since the cables in these places run underground.
Minister of Transport and Communications of Finland Lulu Ranne reportedthat authorities are investigating the matter with the company and are “taking the situation seriously.” Same words expressed and Swedish Minister of Civil Defense Karl-Oskar Bohlin, adding that in the circumstances it is suspected that the cable rupture was done deliberately.
In addition, the Finnish police have already announced possible sabotage, but did not specify the details.
Earlier, a Chinese ship was suspected of breaking cables at the bottom of the Baltic Sea
In November were torn off cables running along the bottom of the Baltic Sea. In particular, the only telecommunications cable between Finland and Germany was broken. Also was torn off submarine communication cable between Lithuania and Sweden. The head of the technology department of the Lithuanian operator Telia, Andrius Semeskevicius, clarified that the cable was damaged on November 17 at approximately 10 am.
Soon German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius statedthat the cable between Germany and Finland C-Lion1 was severed as a result of sabotage. “No one believes that these cables were cut by accident,” he said, without providing evidence.
Later was nominated possibility that the Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3 may have been involved in the damage. It was traveling from the Russian port of Ust-Luga to Port Said in Egypt and passed near the Swedish-Lithuanian and Finnish-German cables around the time when each of them was cut .
NATO consideredthat the ship damaged the cables deliberately by deliberately dropping anchor. External examination of the anchor and hull showed damage consistent with the vessel dragging the anchor and snapping cables, according to sources familiar with the investigation.
By data German publication Bild, the captain of the ship is Russian, and the cargo ship was moving along a “strange route.”
