This is the system for the diving bell, the first underwater diving apparatus used in the 1600s

It would be a heavy metal bell craned down to the sea depths and the air would be trapped inside and water could not enter it, making a tank of air to use for divers.

Do people bath with little candles floating around?

If I were to not hold it tight to the bottom of the tub, would the water level rise as the air is consumed by the fire?

I’m dumb, but I thought putting a cup over a candle suffocates it in essence, hence cutting off the oxygen needed for the flame. How is this possible with the added addition of submersion? Again, please excuse my ignorance

I learnt that this works from Pirates of the Caribbean, when Jack and Gibbs took the small boat underwater upside down and theu could breath

This must be how someone convinced another that a diving bell was safe.

I’m more amazed that we can just casually record videos underwater with our cell phones…

30 years ago, the impressive thing about this clip would not have been the candle ‘underwater’ but the fact that it is being filmed underwater

This is two videos edited together. It flips to another shot while going down. You can see the candle start to go out and then they switch to a shot where it’s already going down.

What’s up with all the steam coming off the surface of the water? Is the water in the tub super-hot?

For those wondering: this principle was used by early divers by using a metal bell to act as an air pocket for divers to swim longer without resurfacing.

This is how diving bells worked.

When testing the diving time limits of the first submarines, they would dive just below the surface and light a candle. When the candle went out it meant the oxygen was gone and they would resurface before everyone suffocated.

Wow! So there is air in the glass for the candle to burn, right?

Well, it’s not the candle, it’s the cup and the air suction or whatever it’s called I forget, but it seals it inside

Another thing people can look up is like the diving bells divers have on some ships for deep dives. The history behind it. People used to use berrels because of the buoyancy they’d drag it down and there would still be an air pocket but obviously the smaller barrel means less dive time because the air would become “bad” in a way so fewer dives before they’d have to come up

This is how they built the Brooklyn Bridge back in 1869. They lowered caissons into the East river in order to dig the foundations for the towers.
