On the same day, the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) together with the Syrian Armed Forces inflicted missile and bomb attacks on places where militants and equipment gather, ammunition and weapons depots, MLRS and artillery positions, and control points. At the same time, in USA called the success of Syrian militants unexpected. Joshua Landis, director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Oklahoma, said the militants terrorist organization “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham” (HTS; banned in Russia), probably did not even expect a breakthrough in Aleppo, but are now moving forward and hope to reach Damascus.

According to the specialist, the problem for Assad is that neither Russia, which carries out airstrikes against the rebels, nor Iran is actually able to come to his aid.

Aleppo is one of the largest cities in Syria. Fighting there began in the summer of 2012, when the eastern part was captured by various Islamist and rebel groups, while the western part remained under the control of the Syrian army. In December 2016, city authorities announced a complete ceasefire.
