I saw this earlier and it definitely raised eye brows at the “no one spoke French or English” part. One of the top comments said to not go to Paris because its over rated and to visit the other cities.

I went to Paris in 2010 and it was filthy with many homeless people stumbling around, but they seemed to be French homeless people. The nicest person we met there was a black African cab driver. Super nice guy, family man, spoke a little English, tried to refuse a tip but it was our last day on Euros and I wanted to get rid of all our Euro coins.

This isn’t entirely wrong, many of the non tourist spots in Paris (and France as a whole) are wrecks and nothing like you’d see in movies or hear about. I went there for a vacation and spent a solid chunk of time helping clean streets and trash up from my grandmothers hometown.

I mean the post isn’t all wrong. I went to Paris in the summer of 2012 and it was a fucking shithole. Trash everywhere along the streets and sidewalks, African migrants trying to pickpocket or harass you into buying stupid Eiffel Tower souvenirs. They’d follow you for way longer than normal and they’d try and block your path.
The only parts that weren’t littered to death were the art museums and most of the restaurants. The food was fucking amazing though and the French people there were extremely pleasant and fun to be around. I’ll never forget a server we had one night by the name of Philippe who gave me my first ever cognac on the house after he stayed at our table and talked with us for a bit. The stereotypes about French people being rude or dismissive of Americans was the complete opposite. I know it’s a tourist area so they have to be at least somewhat pleasant but this guy went well above and beyond.

He’s obviously bullshitting about having been and most of the unsavoury types he describes would definitely speak French, but other than that he’s kind of right – Paris is a shockingly rough and dirty city by European standards.

I don’t know if they’re an Islamophobe or who this is, but I don’t see evidence that they in fact couldn’t have been to Paris. Because they are right, Paris _is_ pretty dirty…

Buuuuut they’re not wrong. Paris isn’t a nice place to be. At least it wasn’t when I was there 2016. Doubt it’s gotten better.

They refer to the people there as Parisians or something.
The teaching of English in France is the most basic of basics so their English isn’t the best.
Just like English, there are different accents in France + slag -
Even if this actually happened. Capital cities, or bigger cities, are where foreign immigrants tend to move to, they all go cosmopolitan. Doesn’t matter what language they speak, there are enough ‘locals’ around to do any holiday stuff you’d want without needing to speak to foreigners like yourself.

I mean I know nobody actually believes the narrative anyway but I spent a week in Paris in January 2020 and it was lovely. I walked everywhere and it was beautiful. Some of the heavy tourist hotspots like the Tower had peddlers of tat but that’s the same in any tourist city.
Would go back.
