The Abkhaz parliament voted against the investment agreement with the Russian Federation
Parliament of Abkhazia rejected scandalous investment agreement with Russia. Because of this document, protests raged in the republic, and President Aslan Bzhania was forced to resign.
At an extraordinary meeting, the majority of deputies (21) voted against ratifying the agreement, two abstained. It is clarified that by the end of the meeting at the Parliament of Abkhazia gathered hundreds of people oppose the adoption of the document.

Member of the Parliament of Abkhazia Kan Kvarchia suggested express a vote of no confidence in the Minister of Economy of Abkhazia Kristina Ozgan, who, according to him, signed “an agreement that is enslaving for the republic.”
Since November 15, this question has been troubling our people. Today parliament voted against ratifying this agreement. (…) This is not directed against Russia, this is a necessary measure, because the agreement, which was enslaving for Abkhazia, could not be ratified
Mass protests took place in Abkhazia
On October 30 in Moscow, Deputy Prime Minister of Abkhazia, Minister of Economy of the Republic Kristina Ozgan and Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Maxim Reshetnikov signed an agreement allowing Russian companies to implement investment projects in Abkhazia. On November 15, its ratification was supposed to take place in the Parliament of Abkhazia, but the opposition opposed it.

On the evening of November 11, after the detention of several opposition politicians, mass riots began in the country. Hundreds of local residents gathered in the squares of Sukhum. Demonstrators blocked important highways and broke into the buildings of the presidential administration and parliament of Abkhazia. Also the crowd tried penetrate into the buildings of the State Television and Radio Company, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Security Service, a shootout was reported.
The protesters believed that the agreement, which gave Russian companies the right to implement their projects on the territory of the republic, would negatively affect the economic sovereignty of the republic.
The President of Abkhazia resigned
A week after the start of the protests, Aslan Bzhania resigned. In the politician’s statement it was saidthat he took such a step “in order to preserve stability and constitutional order.”

Bzhania explainedthat he decided to resign to prevent bloodshed. He noted that during the opposition protests the situation was difficult and could lead to the fact that one of the parties “would lose their nerve.”
November 25 politician stated about his intention to return to the post of President of Abkhazia. Early elections of the head of state will pass February 15, 2025. There are also five socio-political organizations for this post intend nominate one of the opposition leaders Adgur Ardzinba.
