Someone should do the Hobbit meme with, why shouldn’t I wear a mask every flu season?

Yeah I’m going to need a source on that. 1500 cases in a population of 330 million people even with masks and distancing GTFO.

Damn, were we just running around spitting in each other’s mouths in 2017?

Not saying that masks and distancing don’t help, but I don’t think that sanitization gets enough credit. You cannot go in a store without hand sanitizer available, employees wiping off self checkout kiosks before each use, etc.

I know that the cold is not the same as the flu, but I haven’t had a cold this past year. I usually get two or so a year. Hardly surprising, but interesting.

Also take into consideration that schools have been largely closed for over a year in most states. Kids are GREAT at spreading viruses to each other and their families. They give the virus to their parents, their parents give it to their friends and coworkers, etc etc.

Yes, masks and distancing were no doubt also playing a huge part in the lack of cases, but I think a lack of open schools has more to do with it.

Cue someone insisting this is because every flu case is just diagnosed as Covid because $$$

(Don’t forget to add staying home when sick to masks and distancing – it really really works)

I have found wearing a mask in public is, for me, way more comfortable than not. I will probably continue to do so from now on. I have only barely even had any of the usual “seasonal allergies” …. and I sure don’t trust other people to keep their nasty microbes to themselves!

I generally get sick once a year, right around February, and it causes me to miss a couple days of work.

    Didn’t happen this year.

I could have spent two days laying in bed, drinking gallons of water, moaning softly and praying for death. Instead, I spent those two days at work.

    Fuck these masks.

Yeah I think masks are going to be a part of our lives now. Maybe won’t be mandated everywhere but more acceptable to wear them especially if you’re not feeling well

Hand-washing too, everyone just learned how to do it properly in 2020!

I do wonder how effective the masks alone would be. Events that had large gatherings, like sporting events and concerts, were all cancelled. Bars and other places lots of people congregate were closed for a good while. That, I believe, played the biggest part in flu cases being so less. I doubt the masks alone would have made nearly that much of a difference.

From now on I hope they clean the shopping carts and wipe hand contact points continuously. I was a chef and was obsessed with cleanliness and sanitation. I’ve kept hand sanitizer in my car for use after shopping or pumping gas for over 10 years. I’m glad that more people are paying attention to keeping surfaces sanitized and basic cleanliness. Hopefully that reduction in flu not disappear in the coming years.

Does anyone know where I can find this data? I want to share this with some people I know.

Oh my God, the amount of people I know that think that, “where did the flu go this year??” Is somehow an indictment on the whole masking thing is just depressing.

My kids bring the flu home a few times a year. Looking in fb memories, one of us was always sick with cold or flu etc. none of us have been this year and that to me is a good enough reason to continue masks. Even if I am a sheep and they “Don’t work”

There was a right wing meme I saw on a conservative friend’s FB post where they make fun of the lack of flu, implying that something is fishy if there’s no flu but still “allegedly” a lot of covid. I posted a comment saying that thank god we took precautions as covid is proven to be so much more contagious than the flu.

I guess not everyone realize infectious diseases and respiratory illnesses have differing levels of contagiousness, but it seemed like a logical conclusion to me. My FIL also made some comment about the lack of flu and why is it that covid is still around, but his physician son noted the same thing: covid is super contagious, as public health officials have said, which is why it caused a pandemic, unlike the flu.

As an overweight asthmatic with killer allergies, masks have been a Godsend. 2 years ago I got bronchitis twice after flus/colds. I haven’t had so much as a sniffle since March 2020. I work 40hrs a week out in the public AND I have a 4yr old in school. Masks work!

If you ask the people who don’t believe in covid, they say that the hospitals are marking every flu case as covid in order to get more money from the government. “Because that’s what it is, it’s just a mild flu”

I really hate the people here.

  25. DutchDutchGoose574 Avatar

You’d think people could follow that logic, but I’ve heard idiots saying that’s just because there were no flu tests done, it’s been misdiagnosed as COVID all year, etc.

The people in my friends group say it’s because they are reporting all flu cases as Covid that’s why. I’m in Texas and they had an article that Dallas County had only had 2 flu cases reported. It’s all a conspiracy according to my right leaning friends. They usually yell and type in caps so I have to believe them

I think A LOT of flu cases went unreported. People get sick and get a covid test and many times they aren’t tested for flu if it’s a mild illness
