Japenese cashier: It‘s on the house, sir.
My grandpa was a German WWII vet who later immigrated to America. Whenever I was asked as a little kid if I knew any veterans, I had a feeling that they didn’t mean veterans like him…
He went through some bad shit. Was drafted at 17 or 18, ended up living through the firebombing of Dresden. He had shrapnel in his leg his entire life. Was a POW of the Russians until he jumped off a moving train to escape and walked back home. Everything his family used to have was lost. So he went to America after marrying my grandma.
He rarely talked about the war. I think he just wanted it to be behind him. He always rejected Nazism and right-wing extremism and was a fairly progressive guy.
Ein Deutsches meme am Tag hält den Doktor fern
Ah bin ich froh mal wider einen deutschen meme zusehen, so was zaubert einem wider ein lächeln aufs Gesicht

Endlich, ein gutes Meimei
German soldiers didn’t have a choice tho— my great-grandpa *hated* the Nazis but still had to serve. He eventually flew from the front (crazy story, swimming through rivers, no food, barely surviving.) That was about the worst crime that, when caught, got you shot right on the spot. He bribed some doctor into declaring him too sick to be a soldier and told the local Nazis that he was sent home because he was unfit—nobody found out!
My other great-grandpa ate a shit ton of plums everyday until his blood sugar was so incredibly high that they didn’t want him fighting lol.
i mean, he still served in a war just the other side
Hold my BRATWURST
warte was
das kam unerwartet
isnt is like dankeschön?
Just because someone fought for germany in WWII doesnt mean they wanted to. They could’ve been drafted or something
Honestly i hope someone did that as a prank
No no no… someone has done that probbly
this should go in r/ DANKEmemes
He meant “woah that’s dank!”
Imagine serving in the army as part of its supply chain or something because your country’s economy is shit and its a stable job, then your country elects a crazy leader and all of a sudden you’re in a horrible war that you can’t escape from. You survive it somehow and go home to your hometown which is nothing but rubble and half the people you knew are dead. You begin to hear just how crazy your leader was and feel guilty to have been part of it. You get a job and start a family and live out the rest of your life carrying unresolved guilt and shame with you to the grave. Not as horrible of a fate as the victims of the war but there are so many stories on the periphery that will never be told- especially from regular people within the Axis countries.
Wunderbar!
Warum ist das lustig und verstörend gleichzeitig?
You know, most germans in the army weren’t nazis, they were trying to protect thier fatherland; thier families.
I was waiting for a short-distance seaplane flight once with a gentle old man and a way-too-social younger guy and his family.
The pilot was late, and the younger guy joked “Anyone here know how to fly this thing?”
The older gentleman smiled and nodded.
“Oh! Did you fly in the World War 2?”
The gentleman nodded.
“Did you shoot down many Germans?”
“Nein, not many,” the gentleman said with a chuckle and a strong german accent.
