We gave our neighbour’s kids one of our PS4s, and his wife who is from Bangladesh made curry and onion bhajis to say thank you. The kindest thing. We didn’t give the console for anything, we just didn’t need it. Such lovely people and the most delicious curry.

A few years back, our next door neighbors were from El Salvador, they were great people. Both parents worked, and the oldest kid babysat the younger. One of the younger kids had a bicycle accident in the street and scraped his knee up. Well I went out and cleaned him up and bandaged up his knee. I came home two days later to find enough damn homemade desserts to feed half the city. Everyone once in awhile, people remind you there is good in the world. Also good on you for giving him the ps4, solid move

Coming from a single parent household, my neighbors gave me a PS2 once. My mom was crying because she couldn’t afford one for me

This reminds me. When I was living in an apartment complex during college, I gave the neighbor kids couple of chocolate bars. They didn’t speak a lick of English, neither the parents who were from an Arabic country. I think they came to the US for long-term medical treatment. Anyway, the next day one of the kids brought over a tray filled with rice and chicken. She could hardly carry it.

Simple things matter. Simple kindnesses. Even a smile and a hello.

I recently moved rentals from an unfurnished flat to furnished so was trying to give away sofas and chairs I’d originally got for free. I was getting messed around by people wanting free furniture delivered 25 miles away, so stuck £20 on the add to put those type of people off

Anyway I receive a message in broken english asking to buy and if we had a TV for sale as they had just arrived in the country, this family had just arrived in the UK from Syria and had no furniture, I drove all I had surplus to their new place and helped get it in the house. Was leaving and the man went to pay me, which I refused as I was happy to help a family starting out, and he instead gave me a HUGE box of pistachios they had bought with them and a promise of a syrian coffee when covid allows. I can’t wait to go back and sit on my old sofa to hear about his family’s story and experience of the UK

I did this with my neighbor a few years back. Gave her kids a PS3 with a few games installed on it. The only thank you I got was from the kids, not the parent. Doesn’t matter to me, as long as the kids are happy.

Folks are mentioning the containers, and while she might just have them for convenient sharing there’s been a huge increase in newcomers from BD in my city selling dishes on Facebook marketplace – usually amazing food that’s worth checking out!! I’ve got biryanis, kitcherie, murghi fry (the chicken curry) and korma, and it’s been great getting the Bangladeshi versions that I can’t find in restaurants. I’ve read about similar endeavours by newcomers/home cooks doing different types of food in other cities, and think it’s good to support as a potential alternative to big apps and chains during this time. The article I read mentioned homecooks who are using this model as a test for post-pandemic restauranteurship, as well as how helpful they’ve been for older/vulnerable people confined to their homes.

A couple of years ago at a local, large park, there was a large group of Middle Easterners at the adjacent picnic site. I saw a couple of them fanning their flames, so I assumed they were trying to light a fire. I offered my chimney starter, which they took but refused to use.

They weren’t trying to light a fire. They were superheating the coals with oxygen, kind of like the Alton Brown hair dryer arrachera trick.

Despite not using my chimney starter, they kept bringing us food, even well after we’d eaten. And it was delicious and awesome. The only thing we had to offer was some Xinjiang style mutton, but we’re a group of white people, so there’s no way they could know whether or not our food was halal, and I felt bad.

Jeez, a family relative bought me an Xbox for my 15th birthday cause I never had a console before (we’re all Bengali) and my parents took it as an insult and had a whole vendetta against them and accused them of “corrupting” me
